According to webs.bcp.org, the discovery of America was satisfactory due to the large amount of profit attained, the newly introduced ideas, religions, political views, economics, and crops such as potatoes, corn, and squash. The discovery of the new world "opened it up for Spanish conquest" which resulted in a lot of new wealth in Europe. It "paved the way for colonization and exploration." While the discovery was successful in many ways, according to history.com, it was also defective. Christopher Columbus committed mass genocide of the Native Americans who the land was originally inhabited by, as well as "enacted policies of forced labor." Many of the European settlers "economically exploited America" as well as introduce new diseases such as smallpox, influenza, measles, and typhus.
Synthesis Article:
The discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492 is similar to when I first started dance. Christopher Columbus got permission from Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain to find a route to the Indies and the Middle East to trade for gold, sliver, and spices and instead he landed in South America and discovered the "New World." My mother forced me into dance when I was younger because she wanted me to pursue ballet and in doing so I discovered my passion for dance. These two events are similar in that a ruling authority gave permission for the event to occur and the occurrence led to a new discovery (passion for dance, the "New World"). Though these events are similar, they have many differences such as my personal experience had to do with an extracurricular activity and my family, in contrast the discovery of America had to do with the King and Queen of Spain and the original reasoning was for economic purposes. The similarity in these two events shows that new discoveries happen by mistake.

This image depicts Christopher Columbus' landing in the "New World." He is encircled by his crew on the beach of San Salvador. In his journal he records that he "leaped on shore, and ... took, possession of the said island for the King and Queen." He holds a sword in his right hand and the royal banner of Aragon and Castile in the left, proclaiming Spain's new discovery. In the background of the image, the Native Americans are watching the European explorers. Columbus recorded “asked us if we had come from heaven” and called them “the best people in the world, and the gentlest.” He then mentions his plans to “with force . . . subjugate the whole island.”
